Things are going very well right now.  I feel like I am playing well and learning all the time.  I am focusing so much more on the ranges of players during hands and much more importantly, going, with my reads.  I feel like I made good reads in the past, but lacked the cahunas to pull the trigger.  This sometimes leads to spew, but this is how I learn.  You cannot help but spew some when learning, because mistakes are inevitable.  And these are okay – in fact, good! – so long as the mistakes teach you something.  Making mistakes and not learning is criminal.  I am also actively keeping the positive mindset.  What I mean is that in the past, it has been so easy for me to get too high when results are good, but I won’t let this happen again.  The results of poker can be very cyclical and it does seem that whatever goes up must come down.  The ugly side of variance will rear its head again, and I will be prepared that this is to be expected and that I just need to focus on improving my game.  This makes me pretty happy in the sense that my mentality feels at an all-time good state!  I have been playing a mix of 100nl and 200nl, game selecting well.  I hope soon enough that I will just be playing exclusively 200nl, but I will play what I feel is optimum for me, given the mental state I am in when I am about to play.  Sometimes I just feel like playing 100nl, lol.

I got in some golf Friday with two friends, John and Jung.  This is almost certainly the last time I play with Jung as he is leaving in two weeks for Cornell University to pursue a Masters in Computer Science.  I wish him all the best.  John actually met him at the golf course when they met up, kinda cool how things work out like that.  I played like complete dog shit on the front nine, where I just forgot to how to swing my driver.  I had been doing well the previous 4-5 rounds, hitting about 40% of fairways, but being just off the fairway another 40% of the time or so.  Around here, the rough is often not devastating, so hitting about 80% of my tee shots well was pretty awesome.  On the range before the round, I was striking the ball well again, which was nice, but once on the first tee, I just kept hooking the ball.  It was quite frustrating and I lost 3 balls on the front 9 alone.  I started to regain my swing on the back 9, finally culminating in playing the last 4 holes at even, including a monster drive on 18, that lead to a birdie after hitting the par 5 in two.  I am gonna hit up the range and the chipping green once this week, as we have a scrambles tournament for my division at work on Friday.  We should decimate the field though imo, as we have 3 of the top golfers in the division on the same team.  I think we only have one group to give us cause for concern, but we should be okay.  Also, John feels that bathrooms are just optional.

Johnny

I am looking forward to a trip we are planning.  In 18 days, we leave for Knoxville.  John and a coworker/gof buddy of ours Greg, are going to play 5 rounds in 3 days in Knoxville, which has some great courses due solely to the terrain and are very low cost.  We are looking to play River Islands and Ruggles Ferry on Friday.  River Islands is a gorgeous course, rated very high by Golf Digest, yet somehow remains pretty inexpensive.  We will use a coupon from a site called EZLinks and play for $30.  Many of the holes are on the French Broad River and hole 3 actually requires a tee shot on the par 3 to go over the river.  Tell me it isn’t worth it!  Ruggles Ferry is a nice course too, but I don’t think there is a website for it yet.  It is a pretty nice course though and one we played often in graduate school when I was at UT.  Saturday we are going to hit up Centennial Golf Club in the morning, which is in Oak Ridge, just outside of Knoxville.  If you are interested in history, do some reseach on Oak Ridge and the Manhattan Project, lots of history in that town.  Centennial is a course that somehow John has never played (Greg has played none of these courses), but it is a very pretty course and quite a challenge.  In the afternoon, we are thinking about playing Rarity Bay, which is about 75 minutes from Centennial, which might make it a bit difficult.  None of us have ever played this course and it has received some good reviews.  Pictures are difficult to find however, but here is one that looks nice.  Sunday we are debating either playing at a course called Lambert Acres, which is a cake walk course and just all around fun times, or just randomly stopping off somewhere on the way back to Charlotte.  It should be a great trip and should be relatively inexpensive.  I estaimte greens fees to be somewhere in the $175 range for all 5 courses, maybe $200.  Seriously it is amazing how good these courses are for the money.  These same course, if they were in Charlotte for example, would easily cost us $275 or more.  Lodging should be cheap if we split a hotel and even cheaper if Greg feels okay about staying with some people we know in Knoxville – free!  I think the trip with golf, lodging, food, and drinks should run about $400-$500.  And that is if I am very liberal with my food and drinks and we have to stay in a hotel.  It could be as cheap as $250.  :D

Also, Jacob has been so awesome.  He has grown considerably.  He was 7 lbs 7 oz and 19.5 inches at birth and he is now 22.5 inches and 8 lbs 9 oz.  He doesn’t even really look the same to me.  He is still just being aware when awake and sleeping, pooping, peeing, and eating a bunch, but I guess within a month or two, he should be smiling and interacting with us more, which is very exciting.  I have always wanted to have a family, but never did I think I would love being a daddy so much.  I guess it doesn’t hurt that I have the cutest baby ever!

What is that

Sooooo Cute

I am in need of 1 manager to fill my league.  I ask that anyone interested in joining be someone who would be competitive and want to continue to play after this year as well, since it is a keeper league and it is pretty competitive.  I am posting the details of the league below, at the least the critical details.  The sooner I can get a final manager, the better.

  • $40
  • Run on CBS Sportsline
  • 12 teams
  • 2 division
  • Top 3 from each division make the playoffs
  • Head-to-head
  • Roster:  QB, WR (3), RB (2), TE, K, D, Bench (7)
  • Scoring:
    • Passing:  1 point for 50 yards, 6 points for a TD, -2 for an INT
    • Rushing/Receiving:  1 point for 20 yards, 6 points for a TD
    • Miscellaneous:  -2 points for a fumble lost, 6 points for a fumble recovery TD
    • Positive/negative points awarded for field goals / extra points
    • Defense:  2 points for a fumble recovery / INT / sack, 1 points for a sack
    • Points awarded/deducted based on points allowed, 6 points for a TD
    • NO special teams points awarded
  • Standard snake draft
  • Tiered Keeper System:  This is pretty simple and keeps many great players available for every year’s drafts, while rewarding active managers and great late round gems.  Draft picks in rounds 1 through 5 are considered tier 1.  Rounds 6 through 10 are considered tier 2.  All other players are considered tier 3.  Each team keeps a player from each tier.  If they don’t have a tier, say a team has no tier 2 players, then a tier 3 player takes the place of a tier 2 player.  Eevry year a player is kept, there tier is increased.  So for example, if Aaron Rodgers was a tier 3 player last year, then after this year, he would become a tier 2 player if he was kept.  This prevents someone from finding a superstar as a tier 3 and keeping that player as a tier 3 forever.

That should answer any key questions.  I need to know ASAP, as I make programs each year, being the nerd that I am.  So I need time to get that al together.

Been a while since I made a blog post other than that hand which I found amusing.  Unfortunately, I have been in Michigan as there was a death in my wife’s family.  I am not going to go into the details of it, but my wife is very upset, she was very close to the loved one.  Between that and having a son, I have got in very limited hands over the last week or so.  I will get that video review back to you tomorrow though Josh!

Overall this month when I have played, I felt I played pretty well.  Today, I played two sessions.  While I did get annoyed a few times late in the second session, I am pretty pleased with my play overall and my ability to play without emotion.  I made some huge folds in the second session, which were crucial in limiting the damages.  The first sessions started out with me dropping 2.5 BIs in like 50 hands.  I was able to shrug that off fairly easily and just keep playing my game and I had some good success in getting a lot of it back.  I have been careful ever since a friend pointed out that I am probably chasing losses at times to watch for that and if I feel even slightly like that might be the case, I just quit.  That wasn’t the case today, I just genuinely wanted to keep playing.

As stated, I made some good folds, this hand was near the end of session 2.  It was at this point, that I just decided to go do something else, as it was feeling more like a grind than just enjoying some fun poker.  I won’t let myself get into the frame of mind where I just grind hands.  If I am not having fun and enjoying myself, I am not playing!  I mixed in a fair amount of 200nl today, about half of my tables were 200nl.  I could have easily had all 4 tables at 200nl, but just felt like playing a mixture and probably will for a bit longer.  The tables were very juicy.  I even got on the waiting list for my first ever 400nl 6max table, because it was beyond juicy (4 of the 6 players were huge passive fish with about 60 BBs each, yuuuuum).  However, my son woke up and if you are a parent you know what I mean when I say he was having “awareness” time.  That means it is time for daddy to go play!  SO instead of playing, I ended session 1 and opted instead to go read a couple books to Jacob and just mess around with some animals and whatnot.  Much more fun than poker obv!  :D

I managed to get in a 30-minute ride on my bike today.  I am bound and determined to get back in shape.  My son needs me to be around.  I am going to make sure that if I go prematurely, it is not self-inflicted.  I can’t control freak events, but I can control being overweight.  So I will do what I can to be around for a while for him.  I kept making excuses for not getting on the bike, because my truck was totaled.  Well, the thing is, I can go around my neighborhood or get a bike rack for the car.  Sure, bike racks are a pain in the ass, but not as much as health issues!  I prefer the greenways to the neughborhood, because my neighborhood has some seriously steep hills.  C’est la via though, I gotta do it!

Fantasy baseball update.  My two teams are a combined 19-5 and I am #1 in the power rankings in both leagues.  Go me.

Well, that is all for now.  I notice my updates getting more sporadic.  I notice the same thing for my friends’ blogs.  It kinda makes me sad, because I love to write and I love to read updates from my friends with both poker and more importantly, life.  However, I understand what is happening, since it is happening to me too.  The blog updates become more sparse when more time is spent studying the game and more time is spent doing things more important than a blog post.  Until next time, all my readers run hot at the tables and also more importantly at life!

June ended with my favorite band coming out with a new album, Killswitch Engage.  Check out one of their tracks from the album, “Lost”.

June was a good month.  Both for poker and life.  Poker first, since this is a poker blog after all.

The actual results were meh.  They could always be worse (they could be red, ldo), but definitely could be way better.

  • The bad news.  I played like shit to start the month.  And ran like shit.  I can control my play.  I cannot control how I run.  Hmmmm, what does that mean?
  • The good news.  I fixed many problems with my game and I am excited about the prospects of July.  I took control of my play and definitely fixed a few things.

It all changed when several friends reviewed a video I made.  Many, many thanks to those of you who helped!!  In particular, Noel got on my ass about a few things.  I did not agree with him about a certain comment he made, but I still listened.  Basically, he said I was autopiloting and not thinking.  While I disagreed to an extent, because my brain works pretty fast and processes information very quickly, there was some truth to what he was saying – there almost always is a hint of autopilot in our games as we get more and more comfortable with playing that becomes second nature.  An example of this would be raising AJs in the cutoff.  Of course, we all do this.  But that is not what we should be thinking.  We should be thinking about what hands we can open in the button on which tables, can we 3bet these assholes to our right very lightly or are they fishies, can we flat some here – expecting the blinds to aqueeze and allowing us to reraise, etc.  So that was what I disagreed about with Noel and I think he was getting at the same point anyways.  I was  thinking – I just wasn’t thinging enough.  After a good, long discussion with him, my game turned around very quickly.  I just started thinking much more clearly about hands and ranges and going with my reads more.  I still maintain that I thought much more than he gave me credit for (argh!  lol), but there is always room for improvement and people who think objectively can capitalize on this.  So big thanks to Noel especially for the tough love that got my ass in gear and turned my month around!  Also big thanks to others who reviewed the video for me and others who reviewed HHs for me.  It is definitely appreciated!

I had more time to play than I thought I would as well.  Turns out, my little buddy likes to sleep a lot more than I thought he would.  lol  I expect this to change in the future though.  When he starts moving around more and sleeping less, I imagine then the fun will begin!  :)

July has me very excited.  I am not going to make a monetary goal, as it is not within my control.  But I just have a good feeling about July being the best month of poker play in my life.  I have a strong and good feeling about the quality of my play.  I did make some mistakes near the end of the month, but I feel I learned from them and it will propel me even further towards my goals.  In fact, I am only going to have 3 goals for July, one of which has been existent since the beginning of this blog.  That goal is simply to keep improving.  The second goal is going to be a hand goal, however, it is going to be a goal that I am not upset if I miss.  In that, I simply mean that goal 3 and overall life take precedence, but I will do what I can to achieve the goal.  The goal for July is 20k hands.  The third goal and something I never mentioned before, but I think is very very important is to play 100% tilt-free.  I have never had that goal before and have never had a month where that was the case.  But in July, in order to have my best month ever, I need to be playing in a perfectly controlled state of mine.  Now I do not suck Tommy Angelo’s dick like everyone else and worship him as the God of Poker, but he obviously does know what he is talking about, so I will read some stuff from him.  But honestly, recently, the “sexy thing” was the red line.  Now it seems the “sexy thing” is Tommy Angelo, it is all I hear or read.  I am going to go to RiverRock55 for tilt control advice just to dare to be different!!  Anyways, on a serious note, playing tilt-free is essential for good play and good analysis of my play.

Here is the reality of poker people.  Poker is a game of incomplete information.  We observe actions and can then therefore make better decisions in the future, because our incomplete information just had a few pieces of the puzzle thrown into place.  When we tilt, all of the sudden, evey shape in the puzzle looks exactly the same.  We lose our ability to have more information than our opposition, which is where our edge comes from people.  When we notice various hints about the opposition’s play, when we can develop reads and have more information than they do, we win.  It really is that simple.  That and of course, having a Panda avatar.

Oh yeah, that thing called life.  Well, hands down, this was the best month of my life.  My first child was born, as you already know.  Jacob Daniel Timm, my son, entered the world on June 10th.  Not a day goes by that I don’t look at him and realized how blessed I am.  I love my son more than anything and his birth has really helped to make my life feel complete.  I have never had huge dreams of fancy cars, a huge home, or wiping my ass with hundos.  Now I would not turn that down ldo, but it has never been my dream.  I have always wanted a family, more than anything.  Give me a steady job, a great family, a modest but nice home, and I am happy.  So basically this was the month where my life felt like my dreams had been accomplished.  Funny how life works.  By no means am I saying the previous 28 years of my life have not been good or worthwhile or complete, it is just that they journey has lead me to where I have now reached my main goal in life.  Now I get to go with the dream and raise my child(ren) and have a family and that journey is the next chapter in my life so to speak.  Many things get left behind when I turned that page.  Interestingly enough, golf and poker do not.  :p  My goal for raising my son is to be able to provide with everything that I can to help him have the best life possible.  Note that this does not mean money.  You can’t throw money at a kid and expect it to work – this isn’t your boat or your car!  By that I mean, I want to teach him quality values and good strong morals and also provide him with a quality education and give him the tools needed to succeed in life.  Hopefully I can raise him to be a quality man – you know, the opposite of his daddy!  :p

So here is to a great July!  I hope everyone improves this month and progresses!

Here are a couple of cool hands I played over the last week where I went with a read and it worked out well.  The first hand is where I raised the turn and river with air to gain fold.  I thought he was always pretty weak here and could not call a river raise.  I sized it less a shove, which was pot, because I did not want the shove to look “bluffy” and get called.

Stacks:
Hero (BTN) ($100.00)
SB ($100.00)
BB ($50.00)

Pre-flop: ($1.50, 3 players) Hero is BTN A J
Hero raises to $3, SB folds, BB calls $2

Flop: 2 7 T ($6.50, 2 players)
BB bets $3, Hero calls $3

Turn: Q ($12.50, 2 players)
BB bets $2, Hero raises to $10, BB calls $8

River: 5 ($32.50, 2 players)
BB bets $2, Hero raises to $22, BB folds

This hand happened last night, and even though it worked, I am not sure what I think of the play.  I did have a read that villain could float light in 3bet pots (actually, in single-raised pots as well), so I do think I have the best hand a decent percentage of the time.  The thing is, I cannot check/call this turn bet, which screamed weakness and then check/anything the river.  Check/calling is dumb, because at 100nl, I rarely see a flop call, and turn/river bet in 3bet pots not be a hand.  Check/folding is dumb, because I should just fold the turn if I do that play.  I know most of the time I am folding out a worse hand by check raising all in on the turn, but I think I can sometimes get a fold from something like 88 as well.  If you have time and wanna leave a comment about this play, please feel free.  I will leave with you some key stats in this case.  Villain is 28/21/5 over 184 hands with a fold to 3bet of just 38% (8).  He also never 4bet, he just called those 5 times he didn’t fold.  His fold to cbet in a 3bet pot was 40% (5).  I realize these are pretty small samples.

A Day's Work

Pretty stoked about this rebounding today.  The reason I am pleased with it is that I was able to regain my composure and turn the session around.  The second sessions is actually what I am referring to, as I was already up a fair amount for the day and then pretty quickly dropped 3.5 BIs.  Now I know, as well as all of you know, that this is nothing.  Only one of these hands was for a stack, and it did frustrate me a touch to continuously lose these pots in a short stretch of time.  It did cause me to tilt, I admit.  I made a pretty atrocious river call that is really like the easiest lay down ever.  Hopefully, I can continue to work on the mental aspect of poker and not actually tilt in the first place, but I was quite happy with how I acted after the hand.  I recognized what happened, and I still wanted to play.  So I just told myself that I needed to simply play my A game, not worry about the past hands (do NOT chase losses, ldo!!) as they are in the past, and just focus on the best decision I can make at any given time in every hand I play.  I was able to get back into form and win a couple BIs back, then drop them back almost immediately after I got them.  Unphased and just focusing on the decision making process, I got it back up to a well-played last 2/3s of the day’s play.

I did also mix in some 200nl on FTP today.  Just one of my 4 tables being 200nl as I am super close again tot he bankroll I really want for 200nl exclusive play.  I noticed game selection is considerably worse than at 100nl.  There are still juicy tables (I would have just stuck with 4 tables of 100nl otherwise), but they are far fewer in number compared to 100nl.

And yet so proud.  I may not live there anymore, but I will never forget my roots.

Who can guess where btimm was auto-piloting on a weekend night?
