Top 5 Favorite Sports Moments

23 03 2008

This week’s top 5 list is going to include my top 5 favorite sports moments.  dodgyken is going to do this one as well, his idea for this week’s top 5 list.  My top 5 favorite sports moments are all below:

5.  Detroit Tigers getting to the World Series in 2006:

Magglio Ordonez hits a walkoff 3-run homerun in Game 5 of the ALCS to send the Detroit back to the World Series for the first time since 1984!  There are very few things in sports as dramatic as the walkoff homerun, let alone one that sends a team further into the playoffs.

4.  Michigan – Ohio State 1997:

This was one Hell of a game.  The biggest rivalry in American sports, this game lived up to the hype.  Michigan came in #1 and stayed that way, beating #4 Ohio State 20-14.  Charles Woodson starred on both sides of the ball, basically sealing up the Heisman Trophy for the Ohio native.

3.  Red Wings – Avalanche 2002:

Coming right down to the final game of a 7-game series, the biggest rivalry in the sport of hockey had fans beyond excited for this game.  Standing room only tickets were selling for $500 a piece at Joe Louis Arena.  Lower bowl tickets could not be touched for less than $2,000 each.  I personally got out of work early that day to get to a friend’s house to watch the game.  It was great.  I expected a phenomenal game, that honestly, would go into overtime.  Instead I was treated to a 7-0 rout of the Avalanche, including a hat trick by fan favorite Darren McCarty.  It was 4-0 after the first period and the rout was on.  A trip to the 2002 Stanley Cup Finals loomed, which Detroit won 4 games to 1 to become the 2002 champions!

2.  Tennessee -Florida 2004:

I was at this game in person, unlike the 3 previous games.  I took my wife to this game, and somehow managed to get tickets from a friend’s partents for face value, which was great because these tickets usually go for about $200 – $300 each.  It was a great game going back and forth, and Tennessee had just scored without about 3 minutes left in the game, making it a tie game, pending an extra point.  Well, Wilhoit shanked it, and Tennessee players and fans were stunned, having to kick back to Florida, down 1 point.  After forcing a 3-and-out, Wilhoit did end up with a chance for redemption, with a 51-yard attempt (stupid long in college) to win the game with 0:06 left in the game.  Sure enough, he gets redemption as he nails the kick to send Neyland Stadium into a frenzy.  I think my phone rang for the next 2 hours straight and it was such a thrilling finish!

1.  A Course Record-Tying 9-under 63 by btimm!

I played this course with a friend one Monday back in 1999, when I was 18.  Since I worked there, I got to play for free on Mondays, without a cart.  It was a phenomenal course, in pristine condition, and challenging if you were not accurate, as the rough was thick and probably about 3-4 inches deep.  The ball would always sink to the bottom of the grass, removing any spin you could put on the ball and often grabbing your clubhead, causing a misshit.  That day, I could not seem to make a mistake.  I tied the course record (this was back when I actually had time to play and my golf was free), by shooting 9-under par.  I actually just missed a putt on 9 (we played the back nine first), that lipped out, which would have put me at 10-uner par.  I played the 4 par 5s in 5-under par, which 3 birdie putts made, two of which were less than 1 foot in length and chipping in for an eagle on the second par 5 on the back 9.  It was a great day and I have not had a day so amazing over 18 holes since.  Unfortunately, I cannot find a picture online of the course, or I would put it on here.
