Top 5 favorite Musical Voices

24 04 2008

Okay, so I am caught up on my top 5 lists ( I know, slacker) until – tomorrow, when a new one is due out.  This top 5 list is goingt o be my top 5 favorite musical voices.  Not the best 5, my favorite 5, keep that in mind.  Anyways, I am running short on ideas for top 5 lists to describe things about me, or what I enjoy or what I think, so if any of you readers have suggestions for lists, feel free to throw out a comment, and I will look into doing a list you suggest.  Anyways, on to the list!!

5.  Martina McBride

Best voice in country.  Period.  I don’t care if you think I suck because I listen to some country.  My wife loves it and it rubbed off on me.  I ain’t scared to admit it!!

4.  Amy Lee

I don’t really like her so to speak at all, I think she is kidna annoying.  But I love her voice so much.  Literally every time I hear that song “Broken” that she did with Seether, when she starts singing the second verse, it gives me goose bumps and chills, because he voice is so amazingly beautiful.  I know this sounds stupid, but that is just how it is.

3.  Layne Staley

Frontman of Alice in Chains and side project Mad Season.  Alice in Chains was my favorite band for about two years in early high school / late middle school.  I had like 5 or 6 of their tee shirts, ans yes, I loved to wear flannels!!  Unfortunately, his drug problem got the best of him and he died of a heroine overdose.  I remember going to a battle of the bands on campus that year and seeing a band actualy do a cover a TLC song (that was the year Left Eye died) and it kinda made me puke a little.  Everyone was talking about this chick, when she was not nearly as influential or inspiring as Layne Staley was, and she was a bitch to be honest.  yeah, let’s set our boyfriend’s house on fire, good idea.  Ugh.  Yet very little mention of a man who dod so much for his genre and so many people out there who loved his music and used it to help out when they needed it.  No, I am not bitter.  lol  Favorite songs he sang would include “River of Deceit” by Mad Season and “Would?” by Alice in Chains.

2.  Maynard James Keenan

Lead singer for Tool and A Perfect Circle.  I had the good fortune of seeing both acts live and honestly, I am in the minority who like A Perfect Circle better.  I say this, because I love their melodies so much more and Tool is just more raw.  Good, but definitely raw.  This dude is definitely the weirdest man I think.  But his voice, especially on the tracks from A Perfect Circle titled “Orestes” and Three Libras” is truly amazing.

1.  Chris Cornell

My favorite frontman and voice of all time.  I thought he was awesome in Temple of the Dog, Soundgarden, and Audioslave.  It is unfortunate as a fan that he has gotten clean, and married, because now his music sucks.  Basically, it started going downhill with half of Audioslave’s second album.  For his sake, I am happy for him.  But I am not happy about his music anymore.  Anyways, my wife gave me a hard time, saying this list should just be #1 Chris Cornell from Soundgarden, #2 Chris Cornell from Temple of the Dog, #3 Chris Cornell from Audioslave, #4 Chris Cornell solo, no #5.  lol  She is not a huge fan, not because of his voice, but because I played him sooooo much in the car when we were first dating, literally 24/7.  Definitely love “Limo Wreck”, “Call Me a Dog”, and “Shadow of the Sun” by Soundgarden, Temple of the Dog, and Audioslave respectively.

his voice is FINALLY starting to go — with the way he screams, I’m amazed that it’s taken this long.

I still like Scott Weiland a bit better tho.

Scott Weiland is another example of someone who made some great music – until he got clean. Their later stuff sucked big time. But Core and Purple were pretty damned good.

hmmm. cornell and maynard are good choices. although i love AIC, i think staley is more of a role player than a shining artist. with all the harmonies and such in their stuff, he’s stuck in a line and has to tow it, or else the whole thing turns to muck. so he plays the role.

it is a nice role though.

- hehe. i’m not sure that the drugs make anyone better. i am sure that those who can get themselves and the audience swept up in the wonder and the power of the moment excell.

and, when some folks get clean, so much of their lives is about NOT getting swept up in something that the essence of what made them great is lost.

i’m sure they can still hit the notes, it’s just that someone turned off the expression knob.
