Top 5 Favorite Songs

27 04 2009

Back again with another top 5 list to throw at you!  It’s been a while since I have done one of these, but I heard one of my favorite songs on Sirius today and figured I had already done this list, but I must have been wrong.  So this is obviously good news for my readers to learn more about me!  Your personal top 5 songs are more than welcome in the comments section of this post, have fun with this one!

5.  “Little Trip to Heaven” by Tom Waits

This version is a touch faster than the version used as my wedding song.  It is a very beautiful song.  I wish I could find a slower version, but the radio companies hate people putting songs on youtube.  fwiw, it is absolutely worth buying the album “Closing Time”, because this song is amazing.  That version also features a horn instead of whistling, much better imo, but even this version is better than 95% of songs ever made imo.

4.  “Central Park West” by John Coltrane

Again, not the original, but WMG sucks a big fat one.  This is the best I could find on youtube (I know nowhere else to look for pasting into my blog).  This song is amazing.  I love that era of jazz in general, the 50s “cool” era was so amazing.  I love to relax to this song, and sometimes put it on before golfing.  I am big into mood music.  I won’t listen to much metal when playing poker, but I love it before some sort of athletic event, softball, football, basketball, whatever.  I love it before big Vol games, etc. But this is the type of music I like to listen to before/while playing poker and before golfing a fair amount as well.  Really sets me in a nice, calm mindframe.  btw, this version doesn’t do even remotely enough justice to Coltrane.

3.  “The Pig War” by Minus the Bear

Not sure if Andr3w321 still reads this blog at all, but if so, you have to check out the San Juan Islands, near Seattle.  This song is about those islands.  If you do a google search, you can make the connection.  Basically, I find it to be an amazingly awesome, calming, beautiful song.  I love Minus the Bear and listen to them definitely a fair amount of the time.

2.  “Little Wing” by Stevie Ray Vaughan

Okay, so I know that this was originally Jimi Hendrix before everyone goes crazy in the comments.  However, I actually think this is one of the very few times where the cover is far superior to the original.  It really is a better song without lyrics imo.  One of the sickest guitar players ever, hearing this song is what has inspired me to switch from my “man’s room” from the bonus room to downstairs and having an office.  I like the idea of having it set up with my desk, a futon, and a “guitar area”.  Yes, I know this does not mean I will be able to play this song!!  lol

1.  “Mayonnaise” by The Smashing Pumpkins

This is my favorite song of all time.  I just have so many fond memories of it when I was growing up.  I believe this song came out when I was in 7th grade.  I remember having it recorded on a blank tape for the top 9 at 9 from the radio station.  lol  Yes, it was followed with a rap song, I was (am?) a weird kid!  Anyways, the intro to this sick is the maybe the sickest intro I have ever heard in a song in my life.  btw, I need to know who the blonde is in the beginning of this montage video, she is gorgeous!!

Hope you enjoyed the list, until next time!

Nice. Can’t say I’m into #5, and I think #4 would have been more awesome if it was the original version like you said.

Can’t disagree with The Pig War, freaking awesome song… although my fav MTB song is still White Mystery :)

The SRV version of Littlewing was pretty cool, haven’t heard that before! Solos were wicked.

Siamese Dream is one of my top #5 albums of all time for sure. Picking one track out of it is tough because it flows so awesomely well, but Mayonaise rocks!

Nice 5
